Designing Irembo services for the Rwanda Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system.

Updated: Mar 20, 2022

About

The National Identification Agency (NIDA) has created a Nationally centralized and integrated Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system (CRVS) to better capture vital events data country-wide.

This project is about integrating IremboGov with the CRVS system to easily pull data from CRVS records when a record exists, or update the CRVS system with the data needed to create a new record when a record for the vital event in question does not previously exist.

This was done in line with the National Identification Agency's mission to:

To modernize and integrate both civil registration of vital events and national population registry through digital and secure identity information system for legal identity and right for all with an accurate authentication of data responding to the needs of all stakeholders.

Role: UI/UX Designer

Tools: Figma, Miro, Notion

Responsibilities

To clearly understand the overall process of how citizens carry out these registrations and frame requirements with the team, part of that my primary contribution was to design friendly input forms to enable the data entry and design straightforward service application flows from start to finish, From filling in the forms, officer processing, certificate generation and all notification messages involved.

The goal

To design and integrate IremboGov services related to vital events (Birth, Death, Marriage & Divorce) with the CRVS system to detect and capture missing information for the CRVS record to be complete.

Citizens will fill in information where it is missing so that the next time they request services that need the information in their CRVS record they won't have to fill out additional details other than their ID, that way, record certificates will be delivered directly after payment with no hassle to fill in a tone of input fields or waiting for officer approvals.

This was designed to prioritize people over process which is one of the design principles at Irembo.

Outcomes

See this solution in play with an example of the Death record certificate service on IremboGov

A Full CRVS record is found:

Information missing on CRVS record:

Thanks to the team at Irembo and the Government of Rwanda we are moving towards a centralized digital Government that will ease the access to Government services for both Rwandans and foreigners.
